Photoshoot 2

This is my second photoshoot for my digipak which I took at location. I underwent another photoshoot because I wanted a wider variety of images for my digipak so that it looks more appealing to my audience, and also looks more engaging. I also wanted to include the red phone box which is one of the more outstanding scenes in our music video.

Phone Box Scene

Here is some of the footage we shot for our music video. We will use this footage we shot from 0.47 - 0.56 in our music video. The lyrics for this part of the song are:

these sidewalks liquid then stone
building walls and an old pay phone
it rings like all through the daylight
it rings like all through the daylight

Digipak Photoshoot Plan

Here are the pictures I took in my first digipak photo shoot for my six sided digipak. I wanted to capture images of mainly James' face so that the audience can gain eye contact with the artist on the front. I wanted to do this because it is an effective camera angle to have in my digipak as it's a striking image.

Filming Day 2- 17/11/13

On Sunday 17th November 2013 we undertook our second day of filming, but the first with our actor. We spent the day filming in Clifton and Bristol where we filmed at our various locations. We filmed in Clifton Village park, the Harbour side outside the RWA and inside the Bristol Museum which by the end of the day is around 40 seconds of our video. We were in Bristol and Clifton from around 09:00 - 15:30 where we walked around to our various locations and shot our scenes. We used our own camera, tripod and gimbal to shoot our music video for the still and moving image parts of our video. We shot what we needed to and all the itinerary we set we completed.

Actor Change

Our original actor (Middle, Top) let us down on all the days we wanted to film, so we made an informed decision to choose a different actor. Luckily for us we had lots of possibilities.

Our new actor is James Cooke (Bottom, Right), he has a very artistic background and we are hoping that he won't let us down. Therefore we are going to ensure that we plan everything with our actor so he cannot let us down.

Google Calendar

Through doing this Google Calendar I now know what I will be doing and when and I can organise my time a lot easier. This is because everything is a lot more organised.

Yellow Lines Scene Practice

This video is some of the footage we took when we went into Bristol and Clifton to film some of our music video such as the Time Lapse. We wanted to concentrate on a particular sequence which entails a long take. Here is the scene in chronological order:
  • Tracking of the yellow lines on the side of the road
  • Gradually bringing up the camera to knee height and our actor walking in to shot.
  • The camera tracking up his body to head height and an over the shoulder shot.
  • Tracking him from behind looking at the art museum which finishes the sequence as an establishing shot.
This video is a plan and a practice of what our real finished sequence will look like but we wanted to test how it might look when finished.

Weather For Second Day Of Filming: 17/11/2013

This weather is for Sunday 17th November when we will be shooting the majority of our music video with our actor Daniel Boulter. We thought planning ahead based on the weather is a beneficial planning technique because we can chose what to shoot and how to shoot it based on the weather.

Digipak Photo Shoot Plan

Through planning the photo shoot for my digipak I have managed to work out what type of pictures my digipak will have on them. This includes knowing which camera angles I will be using, what clothing I will be having my music artist in. As well as these two things I have planned the locations I will be shooting at and also the lighting and general mise en scene of each picture. This is a very good task to undertake because it makes my production process a lot easier as I know what I'm doing for each panel of my digipak.

Music Video Planning: Props

Here is a list of the props we wish to use in our music video

Here is a collage of the props we wish to use

Through doing this task we were able to plan which props we thought would look relevant and effective in our music video. We planned many props which we may or may not use however because we have done this task we are now sure of which ones we are going to use to what effect. In doing this we are now able to plan and compose an effective mise en scene for our video which is important because these parts of the mise en scene will stand out, which means we need to have good props planned and ready. The reason why we took it a step further and created a collage depicting the possible look and feel of our video was for the purpose of seeing what our music video may look like.

Music Artist Logo

This task was extremely helpful from start to finish because I was able to create my logo for my music artist stage by stage and record and screenshot what progress I have made. This way I could work with what I had made so that I could improve it. Eventually I came up with a logo I like which fits the genre of my music artist and also makes him stand out.

Also, because I didn't just create a name for my logo and made an image as well, my branding will be easier because I have an icon to work with. This can be used to put on clothing and other various merchandise instead of just a name which looks boring. This has made my branding more practical which is a benefit to my music artist as more people are going to be able to recognise the logo.

Here is what I created on Pages. The text isn't very visible on Popplet which is why I have published them on here as well.

Music Video Planning: Location

These locations are our main ones we will use because through them we can shoot a lot of our video. Also these are extremely relevant locations to the style and genre of the song which means that combined with the costume, it will fit in with the song.

Storyboard Video

This is a video of our story board which we have created for our music video. We produced this so that we know what we are going to be shooting over the course of our video.

Time Lapse Test

Time lapse is a style of cinematography that we will be using lots, therefore we decided to test it and see what we could improve for next rime. I have learnt that we need to use manual and set the focus etc. because we used auto and the lighting frequently changed and the camera in constantly moving. Therefore we will need to ensure that the tripod is on a flat surface and all the setting are correct. We also realised that filming cars didn't work because they would be in the picture but not the next, as if they were transporting, we would need to use less of an interval or not film fast moving objects. Overall it was really helpful to do this test so that we know how to improve everything for next time.

Music Video Planning: Fashion

Through doing this task we were able to see what fashion we would want based on the time of year, and theme of our music video. Also, based on the weather, a certain type of clothing would be relevant, which is why winter clothing is the type of clothing we want to have our performer wearing. Even though our music video has a happy theme of living life the way he wants, we may get our performer to wear less clothing than you would usually wear at winter. This can represent different themes such as happiness, being free and making use of the time we have in the day.

Day of Filming: Weather

This is the weather forecast for our first day of filming on this coming Sunday. As we can see, the weather is fairly good, just cloudy. We have decided that a lack of sunlight wouldn't affect our filming as such as we could therefore pay more attention to camera angles and editing if the mise en scene isn't up to such a high standard due to matters out of our control such as the weather.

Ancillary Planning

Layout Of My Digipak and Camera Angles

Through doing this planning task I have been able to visualise what I want my 6 sided digipak to have on it and look roughly like. Through planning which digipak to do (4 or 6 panel) I was then able to plan how I will present the pictures and artwork on it. I chose to do a 6 panel digipak because they are more attractive and exciting to look at because there is more chances to present artwork and photography of the artist. Overall, planning what my digipak will look like is what will make my final digipak look professional because I have a original idea which can be altered and modified based on the pictures I take when I do my photo shoot and edit all my digipak together.

Digipak Advert Planning

Through planning my digipak advert I have been able to chose what I am going to include on it such as quotes from major magazines and websites about the reviews of the digipak. This way it makes the advert seem more professional and appealing. As well as this I have been able to plan out my layout for my advert so I know which codes and conventions of a digipak/album advert should be presented where on the page. This is so it is modified to the audiences actions; e.g, knowing where the audience will look first on a poster/advert. As well as having these conventions, the various formats the digipak will be accessible on is important for reassurance and providing information for the audience so they know where to find it when it comes out. The reason why I am including these things on my advert is because these are the codes and conventions which I feel are the most important and effective.

Apart from the text and typography on my advert, the picture is what type of camera angle I want so that the audience are able to connect with my artist as best as possible. This would be a striking camera angle because the camera angle is a mid shot/close up which emphasises the facial expressions from the artist.

How To Make The Perfect Indie Pop, Music Video

We looked at different music videos of the same, indie pop, genre to see the codes and conventions of this genre and also to give us some ideas about our music video.

Mood Board

Through doing this mood board we were able to plan what type of fashion we would have our performers wearing, what settings we would use and what colours we want our music video to be dominated by. We mood boarded our ideas which we thought would look good in our video regarding clothing and the certain style we thought would fit the genre of the music we are making the video too. With the mood board we also stuck down images of locations we wanted to use. This is incredibly important as well because our clothing could be dependant on the location so that everything fits in well together and looks relevant. We looked at both the male and female look as well so we got an idea as to what we want our couple looking like. We looked at both genders because we are having a boy and a girl in our video. As well as all these factors we also planned what type of props we want to use in our video such as a red phone box or close ups on certain objects. This would be linking to the auteur theories where they always use something in their films or videos. This is one thing we mood boarded because it would stand out and be emphasised if we used the right camera angles, editing and mise en scene. Amongst all this we paid particular care when mood boarding to keep the colours of all the clothes, locations and styles to bright, wintery colours. This is because we want our video to be happy but at the same time in the theme of winter. This is important because colour is a main component of a good music video.

Initial Idea Planning

From this discussion we worked out the style of video we want to create. We also worked out some of the techniques we want to use in our video regarding camera work, mise en scene and editing. We also found that one of the most important parts of the music video is the planning. Planning our music video and how the lyrics link with visuals, following the theorist Andrew Goodwin is an essential and necessity when it comes to producing our music video. If we do this then we will be able to create an effective video which will look relevant to the lyrics and effective to the viewers.

Music Video Pitch Ideas Presentation

Location and Costume Planning For Our Music Video

Location

We are going to make use of the locations around our area which means filming our music video in both urban and rural areas. This is because it will fit in and make the mise en scene interesting to notice with the constant changes in location.

Urban Area Ideas
  • Thornbury
  • Bristol
  • Shopping Centre
  • Alleyways in Bristol with graffiti or art work in shot
  • Tight streets in Thornbury with houses and cars in shots
  • Potential Props: Phone Boxes, cars, lamp posts, letter boxes
Rural Area Ideas
  • Fields
  • Tight Lanes
  • Trees, Forest, Woods
  • Dirt tracks
  • Livestock. aka, cows etc (Comical effect for happy theme)
Costume

The costume or clothing will most likely be winter clothing due to the time of year we will be filming in. However depending on the lyrics of the song the clothing may change. But predominantly it will be winter clothing as we want to flip the cold depressing weather on it's head and make it fun whilst the people in the shots are cold and supposed to be having a rubbish time. This adds to the positive theme and vibe of the video and the lyrics.

Lyric Analysis

In this task, we had to analyse the lyrics of our chosen song, this is because lyrics play a huge part in the way the song is perceived by the audience. Some songs seem to have no relevance to the lyrics whatsoever, so we decided to choose a song in which it would be easier to link the visuals to the lyrics in some way. We did this because we felt that it would lead to a more successful music video if the audience is able to make a link and actually understand and interpret what they are watching in concordance with the lyrics. From this in depth analysis, I learnt that there are many different ways in which you can understand lyrics and therefore expand on them in your thoughts, so the more powerful the lyrics, in turn the more effective the music video becomes. We are able to create a literal music video based on these lyrics which is what we wanted. This is because as well as emulating the lyrics with the cinematography, we are able to experiment and do a lot more with the camera work than usual.  This gives us the freedom to explore various techniques with the camera as well as editing.

Planning For Our Music Video

Focus Group

Our song was Jamie T- Ike and Tina. Through doing this focus group we were able to gather views and peoples perceptions on what was good and bad in this music video. Through doing this we were able to recognise as a group what we thought they liked and disliked so that we had clearer ideas as to what to include, or not include in our own music video. We were able to gain some advice from the audience watching as well which was good because now we know we are thinking twice about putting certain things in our music video. This is good because our own music video will be improved through getting people's opinions on the video, who are our age because a lot of the people who watch music videos now are our age or a bit older (14 - 22). This is good because this is the audience we are going to be aiming our video at so getting the opinions on what is good and bad in the video is vital pieces of information.

Overall this is an excellent exercise to do towards our music video as we now know what people our age like, dislike, look for and expect in a music video.

Fader Label and Matt and Kim

Through doing this I have learnt more about the label which Matt and Kim are signed to as well as them as people and how they started off. I found out how they became a band, where they met and how they started. I also found out a bit about the music label. There wasn't much information on it because it is an independent label based in New York, which only distributes music from artists coming out of New York. This is artists of various genres though.

Seeking For Permission To Use The Song

It is important to seek permission from the record label that I can use the song, because people may think that it is our song. Therefore I will need to make it clear that it is not our song and we do not change the song in anyway.
